Blessed Teresa and the Sacrament of Love

“We have ups and downs and sickness and sufferings. This is part of the cross. Anyone who imitates Him to the full must share in His passion also. That is why we need prayer . . . that is why we need the Bread of Life . . . that is why we have Adoration.”                                                                                                                                                                                            Blessed Mother Teresa

After her death, Mother Teresa’s spiritual director revealed to the world her intense “dark night.” It became clearer just how deeply Mother Teresa shared in the passion of Christ. Many were shocked and startled by that fact, because her actions gave no indication of her acute suffering. Despite her feelings of abandonment and deep loneliness, she continued to carry out the mission that Our Lord had placed on her heart so many years ago.

“I thirst” were the words spoken to Mother Teresa by her beloved Jesus and she spent her life trying to quench His thirst, by serving the poorest of the poor. She never allowed her feelings to stand in the way of her mission, but united her sufferings to her Spouse and the fruits were phenomenal.

Mother Teresa received her strength and was able to overcome herself by keeping her eyes fixed on Christ and His passion. She began each day by receiving Jesus in Holy Communion, and by spending at least one hour in Adoration before the Blessed Sacrament.

Most of us are not called to serve Our Lord to the degree that Mother Teresa was called, but we all have our own particular vocation and mission. As Christ’s followers, we too will share in His passion and experience our share of crosses and trials. Like Mother, let us be committed to receive Jesus in Holy Communion, to prayer, and spending time with Him in Adoration. While doing so, unite your sufferings with Our Lord Jesus Christ.

May we pray to accept the strength and graces that are given to us in this great Sacrament of Love. May we also ask Blessed Mother Teresa to intercede for us and be a light to us in our times of darkness.

  1. I am currently reading "Mother Teresa: Come Be My Light". I heard the story about her dark night, but I never realized the extent of her darkness and suffering! If only everyone would realize the graces abounding in the Eucharist and from kneeling in Adoration with our sweet Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. This was a beautiful testimony Avia Joy and a great quote. Please intercede for us all Blessed Mother Teresa, Amen!
